Tony Sly

There’s an old Youth Brigade song with the chorus “old punks don’t die, they just cash in.” I can remember listening to it in middle school and wondering what the hell they were talking about but years later, I can honestly say that I finally get it.

Tony Sly, who is best known for his work as the lead singer for the punk(ish) band, No Use For A Name (AKA NUFAN), is set to release his first solo acoustic-esque album in February of 2010. Now, this shouldn’t really come as a shock to anybody that follows him or his band or anyone that is even remotely interested in modern independent music, as Sly was featured on a split with Lagwagon’s Joey Cape a few years back, in which he flexed his acoustic muscle.

Admittedly, I have not heard any of the tracks from his new album yet but I am anxious at this point. In all honesty, NUFAN hasn’t had what I would call a solid album since 2002. A big part of that (I think) is due to Sly’s songwriting style changing slightly and becoming more mature and less punk. By his own admission, NUFAN fans probably won’t dig the new acoustic album as the style is diversely different. However, if you heard Acoustic or have listened to the past two NUFAN albums, I think you have a general idea of what you’re in for. Just to be clear though, I DON”T expect Sly’s solo album to be bad at all it just won’t resemble anything NUFAN.
