Val-Halla

Thursday, 5 February 2009

Since their big break at this year's Extreme Thing, the fan base of Val-Halla has more than doubled. Beginning about two and a half years ago, Tyler and Jake met in music class. Having learned the guitar they had a common ground and chose to start playing together. In came Andrew, the drummer. The combination of the three musicians was remarkable and they decided to start a band. Fast forward to present day; on Sunday, June 1st in their concert at Jillian's, the fourth (and final) member, Robert, joined the band. Although it took them a long time to find their final member, it was a position they held sacred and were confident with the outcome.

What does Val-Halla mean? There isn't a band meaning to it but as story goes, they wanted a name starting with a "v." When they opened the dictionary they were gravitated toward Val Halla. Adding a dash in the middle completed their name so they wouldn't be copying the name of any than other band.

Being dormant for so long, the band decided to jump start this year. One of the finalists of the XPOZ Battle of the Fans contest, they won a spot on the XPOZ stage. From across the park people were mesmerized by their, as they would describe it, old school metal with a modern spin. As the fans poured in to the XPOZ zone, many stood in disbelief as the two fifteen and one eleven year old brought the house down.

If that wasn't enough proof for where their talent has taken them, consider this: Their calendar over the next two months rivals some bands that have been in the scene longer than they have. Currently they are writing songs, bringing in their newest edition and cleaning up their act for their June 1st concert. On June 13th these guys have yet another show at Jillian's of Las Vegas. July 25th they'll travel to the Whiskey in Hollywood for a show! If that doesn't seem busy enough, their dream is about to come true when they will meet up with legendary Rob "Blasko" Nicholson; the bassist from Rob Zombie and Ozzy Osborne. Although he's not playing anymore, the purpose of their meeting is to meet each other and a possible discussion of Rob's company Mercenary Management.

Summer months bring a lot of good acts. Many of bands are out of school and are able to invest a lot more time in their music careers. Seeing as Las Vegas has recently been recognized for turning out many talented upcoming bands, these guys have shown that talent has no age requirement. They have turned many heads and as such have paved a path to walk on for years to come.

Aside from all liking Tyler's mom's "famous spaghetti," the band members have other interests that one may not assume from their stage performance.

Andrew (11) - likes to snowboard

Tyler (15) - loves pole vaulting

Jake (15) - draws graphics for the band

Robert (18) - takes pride in being the only one in the band that can grow a beard
