Heavy nicotine use can prime adolescent brains for future substance use.

As of February 2020, at least 39 states are suing vape companies for illegal marketing practices that targeted teens.

JUUL paid influencers to promote their product, especially those popular with younger audiences and have a larger following on social media.

JUUL shut down their social media accounts in 2018, and now claims “We have never marketed to youth and we never will”, the evidence proves that this is a lie.

JUUL created marketing campaigns and programs specifically for teens, including going into classrooms and stating their products are safe when they really aren’t.

World Hunger

FACT:

Tobacco production damages the environment and diverts agricultural land that could be used to grow food. If all of the tobacco farms were turned into food farms, millions of people could be fed.

SOURCE: Drope J, Schluger N, Cahn Z, Drope J, Hamill S, Islami F, Liber A, Nargis N, Stoklosa M. (2018). The Tobacco Atlas, 6th Edition. Atlanta: American Cancer Society and Vital Strategies. Retrieved from https://tobaccoatlas.org/

Pollution

FACTS:

When cigarette butts are littered in water, chemicals seep out of them that are toxic to aquatic life.

SOURCE: Slaughter, E., Gersberg, R. M., Watanabe, K., Rudolph, J., Stransky, C., & Novotny, T. E. (2011). Toxicity of cigarette butts, and their chemical components, to marine and freshwater fish. Tobacco Control, 20 Suppl 1, i25–i29. https://doi.org/10.1136/tc.2010.040170

Most disposable vape devices are made of plastic, and we know how harmful plastic can be to our environment.

The chemicals in vape devices also can be a danger to our environment, including potentially seeping into groundwater.

Lithium batteries have been shown to harm the environment, these batteries are used in vape devices including disposables.

Deforestation

FACT:

Deforestation for tobacco growing has many serious environmental consequences – including loss of biodiversity, soil erosion and degradation, water pollution and increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide. In 2011, over 10 million acres of land were used to grow tobacco.

Industry Deception

FACT:

The deception of Big Tobacco has a long history, even setting up secret labs in the ‘70s that proved how harmful exposure to cigarette smoke really is, but instead of sharing this information they hid it and kept profiting off this harmful product.

Other Tobacco Products

FACT:

Water pipe smokers may absorb even more of the toxins also found in cigarette smoke than cigarette smokers do. This is because smoking sessions are longer and smokers puff more frequently. A typical 1-hour hookah session involves inhaling 100–200 times the volume of smoke from a single cigarette

Industry Deception

FACT:

JUUL didn't have a nicotine warning label on the packaging until the FDA required it in 2018, this is 3 years after their product launch.

Pollution

FACT:

An estimated 4.5 trillion cigarette butts are discarded annually, making them the most common type of litter on earth.

Not-So-Personal Decision

FACT:

Exposure to secondhand smoke causes nearly 42,000 deaths each year among adults in the United States:

  • Secondhand smoke causes 7,333 annual deaths among U.S. adults from lung cancer.
  • Secondhand smoke causes 33,951 annual deaths among U.S. adults from heart disease.

Animal Cruelty

FACT:

In one study, beagles were given tracheostomies so that pipes could be inserted into their throats, forcing them to smoke.

Animal Cruelty

FACT:

Starting in the 1970s, Philip Morris set up a secret research laboratory in Germany where they conducted research on secondhand smoke, including animal testing on rats. Despite finding that secondhand smoke was harmful to health, Philip Morris hid the results and continued to state that secondhand smoke is not harmful.
